Slightly off topic this but I went to a National Trust property this afternoon (Claydon House, home of the Verneys) with Mrs Shedworking and the Shedworking tots. Being NT members, we enjoyed the house free of charge. But we baulked at paying an extra £3.50 EACH to go and have a look at the gardens (which they described as 'working gardens' anyway). Instead we let the young cadets arse around in the large field/meadow opposite the main building which they enjoyed muchly. But I think we was robbed. Shurely the whole shooting match should be free?
I think you were robbed, except you weren't because you didn't pay up. But i suspect the problem is that they hung onto the gardens and didn't give them to the NT - I think because they are Gertrude Jekyll or seomthing?? Anyway I'm sure the Shedtots prefer to roam freerange.
So why don't the NHS buy the Afghan opium crop instead of it going for heroin? Or is that too obvious?
Simon, I think the whole situation is bizarre. Soldiers giving their lives to police the destruction of the Afghan crop while we grow it here in times of extreme diamorphine shortage (I've heard people saying that patients are being denied it, it's in such short supply).
I think the problem is that money paid for crops in Afghanistan is said to go to the Taliban, so that effectively we'd be sending cash to our enemy there.
